WOW WI Book Group met at Loves Cafe as usual, Tuesday 10th September to discuss the bestselling racy trilogy by E.L. James - Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. Not surprisingly these books created a lot of discussion and may have resulted in certain members visiting the Ann Summers store in Bristol! The consensus was that the first book was gripping but by the third book the poor standard of writing and repetition had reduced the appeal a little. The plot was entertaining and basically a love story at heart. Themes discussed included whether the main character Christian Grey was controlling to the point of abuse, and the ease with which the heroine, originally a naive virgin, adapted to his varied sexual demands. We also discussed the easy access that young people have to pornography on the Internet via computers and phones and the effect that this may have. Most members enjoyed the books overall, one of two disliked them but we all had an enjoyable and often raucous evening .
The book for October is "Things I Couldn't Tell My Mother" by actress Sue Johnson and next meeting is Tuesday 9th October 7.30 pm at Loves Cafe West Street. New members welcome.
The book choices for the coming year will be taken suggestions made by WOW WI Book group members. Each member is to suggest a book they have read or would like to read, that they feel the group would enjoy reading and discussing. It can be a recent best seller, one on a TV book club list, a classic or one that has been read many years ago but remained a favourite.
